The music of Hong Kong composer Chin Ting (Patrick) CHAN (b. 1986) stems from an interest in representing his impressions of the visual world with sonic images. It is often inspired by patterns and shapes he discovers in daily objects, as well as imaginary landscapes he sometimes encounters. It centers on the idea of emergence, in which larger entities of musical phrases arise through continuous mutation and layering of smaller cells.
Chan has twice represented Hong Kong abroad at the ISCM World Music Days Festival and UNESCO International Rostrum of Composers. He has been a fellow and guest composer at festivals such as the International Computer Music Conference, IRCAM ManiFeste, and the Wellesley Composers Conference. He has held residencies with the Charlotte Street Foundation and the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, and has received commissions and grants from ArtsKC, the Hong Kong Composers' Guild, and the Music Teachers National Association. He has worked with ensembles such as Ensemble Intercontemporain, eighth blackbird, Ensemble Signal, Mivos Quartet and the S.E.M. Ensemble, with performances in venues such as Staatstheater Darmstadt, the Seoul Arts Center, and the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, in more than twenty countries. Awards and other recognitions include those from the American Prize, ASCAP, Association for the Promotion of New Music, Foundation Destellos, Foundation for Modern Music, the Interdisciplinary Festival for Music and Sound Art – Shut Up and Listen!, the Lin Yao Ji Music Foundation of China, the MidAmerican Center for Contemporary Music, newEar, the New-Music Consortium, Semaine international de la musique électroacoustique, the Soli fan tutti Composition Prize, and others. His works are published with the ABLAZE Records, Darling's Acoustical Delight, Music from SEAMUS, Navona Records/PARMA Recordings, RMN Classical, the SCI Journal of Music Scores, and Unfolding Music Publishing (ASCAP).
Based in the U.S., Chan is currently Assistant Professor of Music Composition at Ball State University. He holds degrees from the University of Missouri–Kansas City (D.M.A.), Bowling Green State University (M.M.), and San José State University (B.M.).
